Sanctuary Southside

Southside is a seedy, run-down part of town that remembers better days. A number of the merchants trying to keep one step above the Bazaar are based here. The only major source of income is the Mage Guild, whose tower and multi-story structure towers over the rest of Southside. Specialist stores selling amphibian body parts, coloured crystals, rare spices, old books, and charms of dubious worth, are common here. There are several boarding houses with penniless mage students, as well as other shifty layouts, itinerants, thugs and the socially dysfunctional. Southside is the place to go for gaming, whores, taverns, and changers in the southern part of the city.

Places

  • The Mage Guild – this building dominates the Southside skyline, with its three story administrative block, and 60 foot tower. A number of the houses around the guild are owned by mages, and many of the classes take place in these houses.
  • The Red Griffon – a tavern popular with teaching staff at the Mage guild. It has some of the heaviest magical defences of any tavern in Alusia – tradition compels anyone who can't pay for their round to add another layer of magic.
  • The Spread Eagle – gaming, drugs, drink, girls, boys, exam answers, and anything else is available cheap at this cluster of interlinked businesses catering to the student with an allowance. There are a dozen entrances, each to a different style of entertainment.

People of Note

  • Askelon – a mage who haunts the dreams of the girls of Southside. They often awake bewitched and eager to please.
  • Catlan – head of the Mage Guild. He is the only one who can discipline a mage.
  • Markmor – an elven Necromancer, who expects the world to fear him.
  • Randal – a Mage Guild teacher. Trusted by Tempus, he is open friendly, boyish, and the foremost expert on covert wizardry. Often seen in the form of a black wolf.

Law

Southside is virtually owned by Jubal. The Hawkmasks keep order as they see fit. The only exception are the mages. Hazard-class mages and those with reputations are feared and respected. They are entitled to do as they wish – those who disagree are often sold for amphibian parts.
