There are a wide range of specifically religious magical abilities. These differ from abilities given by the Gods as gifts - they require faith, worship, and following the tenets and beliefs of the religion to work, in addition to the training and successful performance. If a follower of a religion is out of favour or has transgressed significantly, their Religious magics simply will not work, unless and until they have atoned (or bribed their way back into favour, depending on the religion).
