Shadowvale

Shadowvale is a small, mist-draped village tucked into a narrow fold of the Grey Hills, where the sun rarely seems to fall cleanly upon the ground. Even at noon, long shadows gather beneath the eaves, around old stone walls, and beneath the twisted hill-ash trees that line the lanes. Morning and evening mists creep down from the slopes like pale water, pooling in ditches and doorways before slowly thinning into the day.

The village itself is built of dark stone, weathered timber, and slate roofs silvered by damp. Its people are quiet, practical folk: shepherds, charcoal-burners, goat-herders, root-growers, and a few miners who work shallow seams in the hills. They are not unfriendly, but they dislike loud strangers and keep shutters closed after dusk. Lanterns are hung early, thresholds are swept with salt, and children are taught never to chase voices heard in the fog.

Shadowvale has a reputation for being unlucky rather than evil. Travellers lose their way nearby, horses shy at empty roads, and shadows sometimes appear to move against the wind. The villagers insist these are just hill-mists, poor light, and foolish imagination — but they still avoid the old upper path after sunset, and no one willingly enters the ruined watch-stone above the village when the fog is thick.
