Sanctuary Riverside

Riverside is the section of the wharves dedicated to serving the river traffic and local sailors. It is also the point for transfer of goods from ocean-going vessels to river boats and barges. The entire waterfront area has a chip on its shoulder. To a Riversider, the ocean sailors are superstitious fools, while the land-lubbers are confined and cosseted. The only life is on a boat, and the only way to make a living is by putting one over on the stupid. Most Riversiders smuggle as a matter of course, to avoid duties and excise, to annoy the harbour officials, or simply to get their loads faster so they can cast off sooner. The wider range of services available to foreign sailors aren't required - taverns, brothels and changers meet most of their needs, and the Bazaar, just in from the wharves, sells the rest of their desires. Some Riversiders are connected with the pirates in the Scavenger Isles, either buying goods and selling provisions, providing information and crews, or even taking part in the piracy in the quiet season.

Places

  • The Sea Breeze - a tavern with a particularly distinctive odour of fish, salt and vomit.
  • The Lobster Pot - the fortified guard house narrowing the wharves at the transition between Riverside and the Docks. A common flash-point for brawls, and the line of safety for sailors who have wandered into the wrong territory.

People of Note

  • Klikitagh - a sailor, said to be cursed never to sleep in the same place twice. Certainly he tries never to sleep with the same wench twice. A known Scavenger.
  • Tarn - one of the few outsiders accepted in Riverside. An Eltrandorian up to his elbows in the smuggling trade.
