ToDo: Perhaps a basic overview of "what is a wiki?" -- with a bit on adding pages and red links, etc. Just to given people who've never used the technology a brief intro.

Conversation moved to here..

Can an admin please explain what happens

  • when you upload a large image file - it seems to actually make a smaller version (800px wide??which gets used within the wiki), and provide a link to the full-res version. Does your browser only actually load the smaller version for use?
  • when an image is linked to on Wiki page, with a 'px' specified for display (like on this page for example). Does the size of the image (or the specific smaller version of it) count towards the page size?

I'm asking because people are understandably nervous about using large files on other Wiki pages. I think the Wiki is moderately smart about this, and the few warnings that I have seen around are not required (the link to the full-res tells you the size). Once I think I understand things, I'll have a go at a help page on using images (and why you shouldn't stress about it). --Errol 13:44, 13 Jan 2009 (NZDT)

The wiki uses image resizing software on the server to create duplicates of the image at the new size. It will always create a duplicate at the default image size of larger images. It will create other image sizes (including thumbnails) as the image is used or linked in at that size.

Thanks. Do you know the trigger size (or other criteria) for it creating a smaller images on the image page itself? Look at the different treatment of the png's linked to from Farwey. The over 1Mb one is resized to 800px, but the 180kb 1900px one isn't changed. I can resize externally, but would like to understand a little more before experimenting.

Turns out that the size of image in the Image page is set per user in your preferences.
Doesn't seem to work (for the png's I loaded last week anyway, when looking at them in IE6). I'll look in FF3 at home tonight.

BTW, did you know that GIMP has an add-in that will add a grid to an image? It is well buried.

Useful, where exactly is it buried?
Filters → Render → Pattern → Grid. Help here. Mentioning this to a collegue made him say bad words, as he had done it the hard way a few months back. I also came across a useful-looking map forum just now, and tilted grids.
