Dwarven god of commerce, trade, contracts, and merchants, Borgen is dedicated to all of the mercantile arts, but especially bargaining and the negotiating of binding contracts. Borgan also has a darker aspect, sometimes known as Athnar, that is mostly unknown outside of the dwarven peoples, who is concerned with the acquisition of wealth at almost any cost and represents an unrelenting and all consuming avarice.

Borgan's Rules of Trade

The Dwarves claim that Borgan laid down hundreds of rules that their merchants use to guide their path to profit. A few of these trade rules are well known to non-dwarves, but there are said to be some that dwarves never speak of to outsiders. Some of the better known rules are:

1 : Once you have their gold, you never give it back.
6 : Don't sell axes to orcs. (While some dwarves take this literally it is generally understood to mean that a dwarf should never put profit before the safety of their clan.)
8 : A verbal agreement is worth its paper and wax.
13 : There is no rule 13. (There is little agreement on interpretation of this rule, some claim that it merely proves that Borgan has a sense of humour, while others argue that it should be taken to mean that the rules cannot cover all eventualities.)
17 : The word of a Dwarf is as iron, that of others may be as dross. (Iron implies strong and dependable, Dross is the scum of waste material that forms on molten metal.)
18 : A Dwarf who has broken an oath is no Dwarf at all.
19 : Satisfaction is not Guaranteed.
21 : True friendship is worth more than gold. (There is some dispute on the meaning of this rule.)
34 : War is Good for Business.
35 : Peace is Good for Business.
48 : The bigger the smile, the sharper the knife.
57 : Good Customers are as rare as mithril. Treasure them.
62 : The riskier the road, the greater the reward. (With the corollary that reward should be commensurate with risk.)
194 : Know your customers. (An Athnarite codicil continues: Who they are, where they live, where their children are educated....)
214 : Never begin a business negotiation on an empty stomach.
227 : If that's what is written, then that's what is written. (A Dwarf must honour their written contract, but they also need not go beyond it.)
242 : More is good. <sotto voce> All is better. (Continuation ascribed to Athnar.)
272 : Always inspect the merchandise before making a deal.
