Winter Bees

Natural Habitat
Arctic, sub-arctic
Frequency
Uncommon
Number
1-300 (200)
Description
A winter bee is white with dark blue stripes and is much larger than a normal bee, being between 5-7 centimetres long.
They are active throughout the year, but do not do well when the temperature exceeds 24°C.
Abilities
Winter bees are not tool users, but do build hives. As individuals, winter bees are not sentient. Hives of winter bees, however, are sometimes sentient and may, occasionally, be Adepts of the College of Ice Magic if they have sufficient MA.
On rare occasions, the queen bee is near sentient, in which case the hive will definitely know some of the magic of the College of Ice, and may well know magic of the College of the Sorceries of the Mind, as well.

Weapons
A winter bee may sting:
There is no chance to hit, and neither may they inflict damage directly to EN or Specific Grievous Injuries. The Protection value of their target's armour is reduced by 4. 1 D10 is rolled. This reflects the number of bees who die as a result of that attack. It is also the penalty inflicted on their target before the victim applies the Protection value of their armour, natural or otherwise.
The sting injects an icy venom which attacks FT first, then AG when FT is exhausted. A victim is reduced to zero is so chilled as to be only able to take a step or two, and if they are reduced to more than negative 1/2 their AG, then they are frozen as if by Frozen Doom.
Winter bee venom is less effective against large creatures. One bee dies per point of damage per hex of the creature targeted. If, for example, the bees attacked a 3 hex creature like a troll, and the D10 result were 7, then 21 bees would die, and they would inflict 7 points of damage. Trolls have 6 points of Protection from their hide, which becomes 2, and so would be penalised 5 to FT first, then AG.
