Silberton is the intellectual centre of Sanctuary. With the variety of cultures, the cross-pollination of ideas, and freedom to think without conventional constraints, Sanctuary has developed its own intellectual tradition. Socratic debate is alive in the barber shops, taverns and street corners of Silberton. A large proportion of inhabitants are republicans, bohemians and social activists, sharing visions of utopia and high on freedom and krrf. Their day jobs are often as actors, musicians, poets, bartenders, waiters, sculptors, and layabouts. Other people in Silberton include scholars, researchers, bookkeepers, alchemists, advocates, scribes and philosophers. Also the parents and spouses of all of the above, whose hard work and self sacrifice makes the Silberton lifestyle possible.

They argue about truth, beauty, freedom, and what they believe in above all things, love. Part of the Silberton philosophical tradition is that conflicting schools of thought should be debunked via assassination, character or otherwise.

Places

  • The White Castle – tavern and house of philosophical enquiry.
  • Jharn’s Salon – the best intellectual salon in Sanctuary. Frequent visitors include Cappen Varra, Chan, Sjekso, Taz, and Lalo. The conversations and parties are legendary. It is an honour to be invited to listen to the discussions. Recently closed due to personal tragedy.
  • Van Eck's Scriptorium and Publishing House - A thriving establishment with a wide variety of the most well-thumbed works to ever (and some cases never) be published. Their recent successes include "The Beast Rabban Diaries" (still proving to be a popular seller after they were discovered to be inauthentic), the salacious anonymous serial "The Gardens of Sanctuary" (thought to be the work of one of the Prince's concubines), and helpful social primers such as "Floriography, or The Language of Flowers", "Poisons, a Gourmand's Perspective.", and "Practical Pacting". Their printing presses are also regularly co-opted by the owner's son Ruben Van Eck, for his "folded broadsheet", the salacious Silberton Bugle.

People of Note

  • Melilot – scribe and forger.
  • Alain Aspect – alchemist and retired assassin.
  • Catlan – head of the Mage Guild.
  • The Arts Council - one of the larger philosophical movements, with some Palace backing.

Laws

The garrison keeps strict order in Silberton. Apart from the occasional alcohol-fuelled student riot, Silberton is quiet and law abiding. Admittedly, it is responsible for the False Plague riots, the creation of the Pilfs, and most of the non-industrial-accident arson, but thats just all high-spirited student larks, right?
