Barretskyne

Aka Barretskine

A ruined city in the Drosky Mountains to the east of the Pagan Mountains in the north of central Aladar. It was razed to the ground by demonic forces in late 798 WK.

A completely ruined city, without a living soul inside or close to the wall. Few people visit, fewer return. No plant grows within half a mile of the walls.

No one travels the great Barrets Pass anymore and instead they travel much further east through the smaller and lesser Drosky Pass between southern Aquila and northern Aladar.

Pre War

The city used to be one of the greatest in the Western Kingdom until its destruction during the baronies war. It was famous for its towers that numbered 21 higher than 150ft tall that were built within the 3 rings of city walls (with 7 of these towers in each section) and were defensive fortifications built by leading families to supplement the towers along the city walls. There were also a great number of churches built to enable the worship of the faithful and these number 7 split between the various walls. The Cathedral of Barretskyne was the centre pieces of the city but there were also churches dedicated to Michael, Uriel, Gabriel , Raphael and Sammael and another smaller temple to St Alaric. The city had a large canal system built under the city using old limestone caves which terminated under the central plaza and castle area in a large cavern until 440 when earthquakes cause the collapse of some of the tunnels.

The city walls and gates The city walls were built well and with thought to defence and siege which resulted in them being reasonably wide, having substantial reinforcement and the towers being well made and placed for their defensive purposes. The inner ring of the city walls had 7 major towers and this wall was called the walls of crosses, the next walls are called the walls of honour and this had 19 major towers and the final outer wall has 20 major gates and they are called the walls of blood which is due to the stone used in their construction which turns blood red at different times of the day. There are 4 huge statues in the inner walls that depict scenes of violence in the cities past but symbolise the hope and rebirth of the city through its various ages.

Mists around Barretskyne

The Michaeline chapter house at Barretskyne has reported that on the 8th of Seedtime - Spring 810 a huge field of mist has grown around the ruins centred on the old city and extending for at least a mile around the city.
At the end of spring (21st of Blossom 810) five of the hardiest brothers volunteered to investigate the mists and only 1 came back and he was in a seriously damaged state both mentally and physically and he was unable to say anything coherent about the mists until his death on 5th Meadow 811. 6 more brothers went into the mist on the day after the summer solstice (16th of Heat 811) and 2 returned with no apparent ill effects but they reported losing their brothers in the mists between heartbeats until they wandered out and returned to the chapter house.
Brother Waldemar Ţepes, the commendatory abbot has since forbidden any further investigation of the mist and the brothers are fervently praying for the return of their old leader Abbot Richard Blung who has been on a 'pilgrimage' since 804.

Local Geography

Michaelines chapter house.
To the south of the city is a Michaelines chapter house (fort) supporting close to 100 members, normally. However, at the moment, there are only around 32 members. Normally it is led by the good and fair minded Richard Blung who is a Namer and is very tolerant of mages. He is currently absent and has been since late 804AP.

The Tinternal Abbey of Barretskyne
This fine abbey 3 miles north of the city was destroyed in the Baronies war
