Chartres has significant acreage under viticulture, especially in the east along the stretch of the [[Montrachet River]] south of [[Borderlay]]. Whether this is the ''Haut Montrachet'' of the famed Borderlay wines is a matter of some dispute; Borderlay claims that the upper part of the river ends at their southern border while Chartres asserts that it remains ''Haut'' until the confluence with the [[Alp River]]. In either case, the vineyards along that stretch of river produce notably better vintages than those south of the Alp or along the [[Adour River]] to the west of Chartres.
